The Thrill of Returning to the Masai Mara

The Thrill of Returning to the Masai Mara

As my trip later this month to the Masai Mara approaches, excitement is building. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of descending from Nairobi in a tiny plane, watching the vast landscape unfold beneath me. As we near the northern conservancies, I find myself eagerly scanning the ground for the first signs of wildlife—tiny dark spots in the distance that hint at the incredible sightings ahead.

The first glimpses are usually zebra grazing in a clearing or a small herd of topi. As the flight continues, the magic of the Mara begins to reveal itself—elephants ambling through the trees, hippos yawning in the shallows, and giraffes striding gracefully across the plains.

Upon landing, the journey to camp is often just as thrilling. It’s not uncommon to see large elephant herds in the marsh or even members of the Marsh Pride of lions resting lazily in the grass beside our dusty track.

By this point, my excitement is off the charts. Every visit brings something new, and while some moments are perfect for wildlife photography, others are simply unforgettable experiences—too raw, too real to be framed as wall art.

This blog is dedicated to those moments—the unexpected, the extraordinary, and the stories that go beyond the picture-perfect. I hope you find these images as fascinating as I do, even if they don’t fit the traditional definition of “art.”
